The numbers 580 and 590 describe different catcher shapes and closing paths. They are not equipment-quality rankings.
580-Style Catcher
A 580-style catcher generally places the thumb lower and closes from the fingers toward the palm or over the thumb.

Gloves from different manufacturers will not feel identical simply because they are described as 580- or 590-style. Internal palm construction, thumb angle and finger positioning still vary.
Single-T vs. Double-T Catcher Pockets
Pocket construction affects depth, structure and how the glove receives the puck.
Single-T Pocket
A single-T uses one central T-shaped support. It can provide a defined pocket channel and direct closing feel.

Selected professional catchers are available with different palm-protection levels.
A game-ready palm generally provides easier initial closure. A pro or extra-protected palm adds material for goalies facing harder shots but may require additional break-in.
Consider:
- The speed of shots regularly faced
- Competitive or recreational use
- Practice frequency
- Previous hand stingers
- Preferred break-in time
- Whether the glove will be used for games, practice or both
The easiest-closing palm is not always the correct protection level for every goalie.
How Should a Senior Goalie Catcher Fit?
The hand should sit securely inside the catcher without excessive movement. The fingers and thumb should reach their intended positions, and the glove should move with the hand during presentation and closure.
During fitting, check that:
- The fingertips reach the finger stalls
- The thumb remains securely supported
- The palm does not feel excessively loose
- The wrist and backhand straps can be adjusted comfortably
- The catcher does not rotate around the hand
- The goalie can fully open and close the glove
- The closure follows the natural hand movement
- The cuff permits comfortable wrist mobility
- The glove works properly with the chest protector sleeve
Some adults fit more securely in an intermediate catcher. Senior sizing should be chosen according to hand fit rather than age or playing level alone.
Senior vs. Intermediate Goalie Catchers
Senior catchers generally use larger internal palms, longer finger stalls and full senior external dimensions.
Consider an intermediate catcher when:
- The fingers do not reach the senior finger stalls
- The glove rotates around the hand
- Every strap must be overtightened
- The senior catcher is difficult to hold open
- The goalie controls an intermediate glove more naturally

Regular and Full-Right Senior Catchers
Senior catchers may be available in regular and full-right orientations.
A regular goalie wears the catcher on the left hand and blocker on the right. A full-right goalie wears the catcher on the right hand and blocker on the left.
Confirm orientation before ordering. Full-right availability may be more limited in certain models, colours and clearance products.
Breaking In a Senior Catcher
Professional catchers and gloves with additional palm protection may require more break-in than recreational or game-ready models.
Safer break-in methods include:
