Junior and Youth Goalie Pants for Developing Goalies
Junior goalie pants are designed around the smaller waists, hips and legs of developing players. They protect the waist, hips, kidneys, groin and thighs while providing the room needed for a goalie stance, butterfly saves and repeated recoveries.
Properly fitted goalie pants should remain securely positioned without feeling excessively heavy or restrictive. Pants that are too large may rotate, slide downward or interfere with the leg pads. Pants that are too small may restrict movement or leave unwanted gaps between the pants, chest protector and knee protection.
The current Junior & Youth Pants collection at The Goalie Crease includes junior models from Bauer, CCM, Warrior and TRUE. These options range from recreational equipment for newer goalies to more performance-focused pants for competitive players.
Compare Junior Goalie Pant Models
Depending on current inventory, this collection may include:
- Bauer S26 GSX Junior goalie pants
- CCM F5 Junior goalie pants
- Warrior X5 Junior goalie pants
- TRUE Catalyst 7X5 Junior goalie pants
Each model provides a different combination of waist security, protection, mobility and adjustment. The best choice depends on the child’s measurements, playing level, preferred fit and the chest protector, jock or jill, knee protection and leg pads worn with the pants.
Bauer S26 GSX Junior Goalie Pants
The
Bauer S26 GSX Junior goalie pants
are designed for newer and recreational goalies who need dependable protection in an accessible, comfortable design.
Bauer gives the GSX pants a goalie-specific profile intended to provide coverage while leaving room for movement. An internal comfort belt helps keep the pants securely positioned without requiring the outer waist to be pulled excessively tight.
The GSX may be a strong option for house-league, recreational or developing goalies who want straightforward adjustment and a traditional goalie pant fit.
When fitting the GSX, check that the internal belt holds the pants securely and that the thigh protection does not hang low enough to interfere with the knee guards or upper portion of the leg pads.
CCM F5 Junior Goalie Pants
The
CCM F5 Junior goalie pants
combine protective coverage with multiple adjustment features for younger goalies.
CCM’s Max Flex Fit is designed to preserve coverage while allowing the pants to move with the goalie. Segmented PE foam through the protective areas helps support mobility during stance changes, butterfly drops and recoveries.
The FIT+ internal belt allows parents and goalies to personalize how securely the pants sit around the waist. This can also help accommodate goalies who prefer to tuck the lower portion of their chest protector into the pants.
Additional F5 features include moulded waist and thigh protection, a padded comfort liner, durable exterior materials with stretch zones and a hidden zipper that can provide additional pant length.
The CCM F5 may suit developing goalies who need a secure internal waist fit, good adjustment and a mobile construction that can work with either a tucked or untucked chest protector.
Warrior X5 Junior Goalie Pants
The
Warrior X5 Junior goalie pants
are designed to combine protective coverage with flexibility and lower-body mobility.
A contoured waist and segmented hip and kidney protection help the pants follow the shape of the goalie’s body. Warrior uses HyperComp and protective foam in important areas to provide coverage without making the pants unnecessarily difficult for a young goalie to move in.
Warrior’s AxyCut design shapes the lower outer edge of the pants to reduce interference with the leg pads. This can help the goalie bring the knees and pads together more naturally when closing the five-hole.
The internal belt uses dual adjustment to help hold the pants securely. It can also be removed depending on how the goalie prefers to integrate the pants with the chest and arm protector.
Other features include suspender attachment points, increased thigh coverage and a removable inner-thigh pad that allows the fit and five-hole area to be adjusted.
The Warrior X5 may be a good choice for developing goalies who prioritize lower-body mobility, thigh coverage and compatibility with a wide butterfly stance.
TRUE Catalyst 7X5 Junior Goalie Pants
The
TRUE Catalyst 7X5 Junior goalie pants
are positioned for competitive young goalies seeking a higher-performance balance of protection, comfort and mobility.
TRUE uses its Intelligent Body Protection construction to place impact protection in important areas while preserving movement. The pants are designed to absorb impacts without making it unnecessarily difficult for the goalie to rotate, drop into the butterfly or recover.
A ventilated mesh liner promotes airflow inside the pants and helps improve comfort during longer practices and games. The construction is intended to remain protective while allowing fluid movement through the hips and upper legs.
The Catalyst 7X5 may suit competitive junior goalies who practise and play frequently and want a more performance-focused protective package.

A competitive model is not automatically the best choice for every child. Waist security, pant length, mobility and compatibility with the rest of the goalie setup should determine which pants are most appropriate.
What Is the Difference Between Youth and Junior Goalie Pants?
Youth goalie equipment is generally designed for smaller and younger children, while junior equipment provides larger waist dimensions, greater pant length and additional protective coverage for growing players.
The current products in this collection are primarily junior-sized models. A younger goalie may still fit a junior pant if their waist, height and body proportions fall within the manufacturer’s sizing range.
Age alone should not determine whether a child needs youth or junior pants. Important measurements include:
- Waist circumference
- Overall height
- Hip width
- Upper-leg length
- Torso and leg proportions
- Current jock or jill size
- Current chest protector size
- Leg pad and knee-guard setup
Two children of the same age may require different pant sizes because of differences in height, waist size and body proportions.
How Should Junior Goalie Pants Fit?
Junior goalie pants should sit securely around the child’s waist without restricting breathing, bending or hip movement. They should leave enough room for a goalie jock or jill and provide proper overlap with the chest protector.
During fitting, check that:
- The waist or internal belt can be secured comfortably
- The pants do not rotate or slide downward
- The hip and kidney protection remain aligned
- The thigh protection covers the upper legs
- The child can bend comfortably at the waist and hips
- The pants do not interfere with the knee guards
- The lower edge does not catch on the leg pads
- The chest protector overlaps without creating a large gap
Have the goalie test the pants in a realistic stance. They should crouch, drop into the butterfly, rotate through the hips and recover to their feet while wearing the equipment.
Measuring a Child for Goalie Pants
Waist circumference is the most important starting measurement, but it should not be used by itself. Pant length and body proportions also affect fit.
Helpful information for sizing includes:
- The child’s age and height
- Waist circumference at the normal pant position
- Current goalie pant brand and size
- Current chest protector brand and size
- Whether the chest protector is tucked or untucked
- Whether suspenders are used
- Playing level and frequency of use
Manufacturer sizing can vary. A junior size from one brand may not fit exactly like the same listed size from another brand.
Internal Belts and Waist Adjustment
Many junior goalie pants use an internal belt to hold the equipment securely around the child’s waist. The internal belt can provide a close fit while allowing the outer protective shell to remain wider and maintain coverage.
The belt should be snug enough to prevent the pants from rotating or sliding without restricting breathing or movement.
Internal belts can be especially useful for goalies who are between listed sizes or who prefer additional space for tucking the chest protector.
Using Suspenders With Junior Goalie Pants
Some young goalies use suspenders to help keep their pants at the preferred height. Suspenders may be useful when the goalie prefers a looser waist or when the internal belt alone does not hold the pants in the desired position.
Confirm that the pants include appropriate suspender buttons or attachment loops. The suspenders should hold the pants securely without pulling them so high that they interfere with the chest protector or leg movement.
Pant Length and Thigh Protection
The thigh protection should cover the upper legs while leaving enough room above the knee guards and leg pads.
Pants that are too long may:
- Catch on the knee guards
- Contact the upper portion of the leg pads
- Bunch behind the knees
- Restrict the butterfly
- Make recoveries more difficult
Pants that are too short may leave a larger gap between the thigh protection and knee guards. Length extensions can help refine the fit on selected models, but they cannot correct pants that are fundamentally the wrong waist size.
Tucking or Untucking the Chest Protector
Junior goalie pants can be worn with the chest protector tucked into the waist or untucked over the outside.
Tucking may create a more connected fit between the upper- and lower-body protection. Wearing the chest protector untucked may provide additional freedom around the waist.
Neither method is automatically better. The chest protector and pants should overlap correctly without pushing each other out of position.

Wearing a Goalie Jock or Jill
Junior goalie pants must be worn with protective equipment designed specifically for goaltending. A properly fitted goalie jock or jill provides essential protection underneath the pants.

goalie jocks and jills

The child should wear their normal jock or jill and base layers when trying on goalie pants. This helps confirm that the pants provide enough room without becoming unnecessarily loose.
Compatibility With Knee Guards and Leg Pads
Goalie pants, knee guards and leg pads must work together. The bottom of the pants should overlap with the knee protection without preventing the knees from bending or affecting pad rotation.
The goalie should be able to bring the knees and leg pads together without the pants becoming trapped between the pads.

Do Not Buy Goalie Pants Too Large for Growth
A reasonable amount of adjustment room may help the pants last through normal growth, but equipment should not be purchased significantly oversized.
Oversized goalie pants may:
- Rotate around the waist
- Slide downward during play
- Interfere with the leg pads
- Restrict hip and knee movement
- Leave protective areas misaligned
- Make the equipment feel unnecessarily heavy
A properly fitted lower-priced pant is generally a better choice than a higher-level model that the child cannot move comfortably in.
Choosing Protection for Recreational or Competitive Hockey
The required protection level depends on the child’s age, league, playing frequency and the speed of the shots being faced.
A newer or recreational goalie may prioritize comfort, manageable weight and easy adjustment. A competitive goalie who practises and plays several times each week may benefit from upgraded hip, kidney and thigh protection.
Consider:
- Recreational or competitive use
- Frequency of practices and games
- Age and strength of opposing shooters
- Protection through the waist, hips and thighs
- Equipment weight
- Mobility through the hips and knees
- Ventilation and internal comfort
- Expected length of use
Caring for Junior Goalie Pants
Remove goalie pants from the equipment bag after every practice and game. Open the waist and internal belt and allow the pants to dry fully in a ventilated area.
Inspect the pants regularly for:
- Worn or damaged internal belts
- Broken buckles and adjustment components
- Torn exterior materials
- Damaged stretch zones
- Compressed protective padding
- Loose thigh protection
- Damaged suspender attachment points
- Changes in fit caused by growth
Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and avoid excessive heat or cleaning methods that could damage the protective foams, straps or exterior materials.
Choosing the Right Junior or Youth Goalie Pants
When comparing junior goalie pants, consider:
- The child’s height and waist measurement
- Junior or youth equipment proportions
- Overall pant and thigh length
- Internal belt and waist adjustment
- Hip, kidney and thigh protection
- Mobility through the stance and butterfly
- Compatibility with the chest protector
- Clearance around the knee guards and leg pads
- Playing level and shot exposure
- Budget and expected frequency of use
Proper fit should take priority over brand, appearance or purchasing excessive room for growth.
